Linguistically Hijama means “sucking.”  Contextually it means drawing out the blood.

Hijama is a form of spiritual healing.

The cause of illness

The reason for the pain is toxic blood. This must be drawn out. In fact Islamic medicine holds the view that when all toxins are expelled from the bloodstream sickness can never fester.

 Steps for seeking shifa

One must remember that Allah swt is The Shafi and The Healer.  Thus health is sought from Him exclusively. One must have complete trust in Allah.  The Doctor or the tablet are not the central cause of the cure.  To assume otherwise would be hidden polytheism/shirk maghfi.

Istekhara

Upon making a decision to seek Hijama one should seek Allah’s counsel and the goodness of this decision.  This can be effected by praying two voluntary units and making the dua of Istekhara.

Dua is a weapon against problems and misfortune . There is a strong relationship between stress relief and dua.  Dua is a medical therapy. It is an admission of weakness and a way of transferring one’s problems to a stronger , supernatural power so that one feels relieved of their burden.

Proofs

The following is a list of Prophetic narrations on the value and importance of Hijama:-

—  I did not pass by any group of angels on the night of Al-Isra, unless they said to me, O Muhammad, tell your Ummah to do Hijama”
collected by the Sahih sunan of At-Tirmadee and Ibn Maja

—  The Prophet (SAW) said: “If there is anything good in the medicines with which you treat yourselves, it is in the incision of the Hijama therapist, or a drink of honey or cauterization with fire, but I do not like to be cauterized.” (Reference: Muslim, 2205)

—  The Prophet of Allah, Rasool Allah (SAW) used cupping on his honourable head for migraine (Collected by Al-Bukhari), on his honourable hip joint (Collected by Abu Dawud) and back of the neck (Kahill) lateral sides of the neck and between shoulders (Collected by Abu Dawud, At-Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah)

—  Abu Hurairah (may Allaah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, “If there was something excellent to be used as a remedy then it is cupping (hijama).” [Saheeh Sunan abi Dawud (3857).

—  Narrated AbuKabshah al-Ansari: The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) used to have himself cupped on the top of his head and between his shoulders, and that he used to say: If anyone pours out any of his blood, he will not suffer if he applies no medical treatment for anything.Abu Dawood Book 28, Number 3850.

—  Narrated AbuHurayrah: The Prophet (peaceb e_upon_him) said: If anyone has himself cupped on the 17th, 19th and 21st it will be a remedy for every disease. Abu Dawood Book 28, Number 3852

—  Narrated Kabshah daughter of AbuBakrah:(the narrator other than Musa said that Kayyisah daughter of AbuBakrah) She said that her father used to forbid his family to have themselves cupped on a Tuesday, and used to assert on the authority of the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) that Tuesday is the day of blood in which there is an hour when it does not stop. Abu Dawood Book 28, Number 3853

When is Hijama Mustahabb/liked?

There are four humours/body fluids that make up the body.  They are:-

1. Blood.
2. Black bile.
3. Yellow bile.
4. Phlegm.

In the beginning days of the month the blood is active and at the end it is calm and stable.  The middle days are therefore chosen for moderation- “Itadaal.” However despite the above, in Islamic law any day or time is acceptable.

The reward of Hijama

The therapist gets imm ensereward from Allah swt for relieving suffering. It carries the reward of reviving a noble Sunnah of The Last Prophet.  It also gains innumerable other rewards.

Alternate medicine

This is not as effective at times. Hijama is a medicine revealed by Wahy-inspiration to The Last Messenger pbuh. It is engineered by Allah and is the wisest remedy as the body heals itself.

Types of illness

Hijama is a cure for all types of illnesses including cancer, infertility and even mental health issues.
